There are still slots available for Cadet Officer School, where our old friend, Capt. Mickey Jordan, will be teaching. The school has increased the number of seminars at COS and needs more cadets.  Any cadet who meets the requirements for attendance at COS, who did not apply, but who would like to attend the 2008 COS please send the cadet's name and CAPID to Bobbie Tourville (BTOURVILLE@capnhq.gov) no later than 12:00 noon (Central) on Saturday, 10 May. 
 As a reminder, requirements to attend Cadet Officer School for 2008 are:
 1. Must have a Mitchell Award at the time of application
 2. Must be 16 years old by 16 June 2008
 Registration for Cadet Officer School is $250, and we will pay the cost for travel for the cadets.
 We will take 17 cadets.  Selections will be made from the names submitted on Monday, 12 May.

Spartanburg Cadets visit Vietnam Memorial Wall

Cadets from the Spartanburg Composite Squadron visited "The Wall That Heals," the traveling version of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. The mobile version of the wall, along with a traveling museum was at the University of South Carolina Upstate.

 

SC Color Guard takes second place at region competition

       Ft pickett, va - Cadets from the Coastal Charleston Composite Squadron, representing the South Carolina Wing, took second place in the annual Region Color Guard Competition at Ft Pickett, VA this past weekend. The team, comprised of cadets Taylor Cyr, Peter Jerdan, Elizabeth Kovarik and Braden Reid competed against teams from Maryland, West Virginia, and North Carolina. The SC team and the North Carolina team tied for first place at the end of the competition. The tie was broken when North Carolina placed higher in the Written Exam, according to CAP Lt Colonel Phyllis Griffin, competition coordinator.
       The competition consisted of seven events;  Inspection, Standard Drill, Indoor Practical, Outdoor Practical, Panel Quiz, Written Exam, and Mile Run.  The South Carolina team tied for second place with North Carolina in the Inspection category, second in the Standard Drill, first in the Indoor Practical, second in the Outdoor Practical, third in the Panel Quiz, fourth in the Written Exam, and first in the Mile Run. Cadet Peter Jerdan of Coastal Charleston Squadron won the individual Fleet Foot award with the best time of 5:32 in the Mile Run.
       The squadron Deputy for Cadets, Lt Col. Chad Morris had nothing but praise for the four members Color Guard team. “Their excellent showing in the competition was due to their hard work and many practice sessions, plus attention to detail. Lt Col Morris, assisted by Flight Officer Stephen Harper, Captain Tina Petersen, the squadron’s cadet commander Nathan Coward, and cadet Lexington Hoffman accompanied the team to Virginia.

 

 

 

Spring CTW photos!
The SC Wing had an awesomely successful Cadet Training Weekend March 28-30. It was a new format for CTW, a one-stripe academy aimed at giving cadets in their first four ranks everything they need to promote. Two cadets, Katherine Carter and Jordan Thomas shared the award for honor cadet after passing both their leadership and aerospace tests without making a single error!

Encampment rescheduled!!!

Due to circumstances beyond CAP's control, this year's encampment has been rescheduled for July 5-11 at McCrady Army National Guard Training Center. Make plans now to attend. You will NOT want to miss it!

 

   

 

Florence SAREX
The Florence Composite Squadron held a SAREX January 4th that included stretcher training encompassing various terrain, ELT finding using the L-PER, missing-person search techniques, and basic first aid.

 

 

 Cadet Rocketry Weekend - May 16 - 18

The Richland Cadet Squadron is hosting a Cadet Rocketry Weekend May 16-18. Cadets will be able to build, launch and take home (if recovered!) three solid fuel rockets (including a two stage) made from FedEx, UPS and US Post Office packaging materials. Contact Lt Ger Button.
